You just have to wear rubber gloves, eye goggles and always pour your lye carefully into your water, not the other way around....I promise it won't explode lol. Also be in a ventilated area and be aware that it's very hot as soon as it hits the water. Keep vinegar nearby in case of splashes as it totally neutralizes the lye :)
if it all possible, do your lye outside! I work my knee in the plastic picture and put it on a countertop outside where the local cats won't knock it over. I find putting it on an ice bath in the summer speeds up cooling here in Arizona in the summer heat! they're wise, it can take up to two hours to cool sufficiently. still use the gloves and goggles and if you want to protect your clothes from splashing, cut a hole and armholes in a garbage bag for an apron.
making men's shaving soap, using basic Castile recipe added extra coconut oil, bentonite clay, Shea butter and glycerin. trying to make the lather stay "wet"
longer. Any other suggestions?

Hi Betsy, I can't really think of a way to make the lather stay wet longer...other than suggesting using a shaving brush to get a really good lather going. Otherwise, you might want to consider trying to make a cream shaving soap?
Is there any way you can help come up with a shampoo bar for oily hair that has allergies to cocoa, palm, coconut oils? I am desperate. Please help. I CP and HP soaps so anything will help.

Hi Tracy, I have only ever tried the one shampoo recipe - I haven't experimented with it, so I'm afraid I won't be much help. There is a great thread dedicated to shampoo bars here: http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=3... .... I'm thinking you will find some helpful information there...best of luck! :)
