Tayberry & Teakwood

First, let me say that I didn’t think this soap was going to work. I was trying a new recipe and didn’t know how quickly it would move (strike 1), plus I was using a new fragrance oil (strike 2), and I wanted to swirl (strike 3).

I barely, and I mean barely brought the mixture to emulsification so that I would have plenty of time to split out the colors and layer the soap for my swirls. It was so thin, that I really wondered if I would end up with my first separated soap.

I’m not going to embed the swirling video here, because I didn’t realize how loud the music was in the background! You can click on the link below to take you to the video, I just didn’t want anyone to be surprised by the background noise. As you can see from the video, the green ended up thickening pretty quickly; even though it was technically still thin, it was lumpy when I poured it…uh oh!

It’s not my finest example of swirling….and the soap was looking kinda spotty before I put the dividers in. Some parts were already glazed over and some were still very translucent, some of the green parts had taken on a ‘slushy’ appearance…this was something I hadn’t encountered before…

At this point I was also rethinking my color choices, I was seriously having second thoughts about all that red! I crossed my fingers and inserted the dividers and hoped for the best…

When I checked on it a couple of hours later, it seemed to have all come together….I think I got very lucky with this one! The colors seem to have mellowed a bit and the soap came together well.

This soap contains coconut oil, canola oil, olive oil, castor oil and cocoa butter. I love this fragrance oil, by the way…woodsy and yet fruity/berry at the same time, very refreshing!

    1. It occurred to me too that it looks more like a Christmas soap! I might have to remake this with a Christmas Candy fragrance :)

  2. Oh my, Signe is right, they really look like those candies! For some reason,I couldn't start video on my phone,so I'll check it later. Anyway,I like your colours and swirls and I noticed your recipe was palm free. How do you like canola,I have seen many US soapers dislike it, I suppose because GMO canola predominates in the states.
I've used it and never has got DOS, or similar issues and I'm sure this domestic one is not GMO. I've used it up to 7%,though!

    1. In this recipe, the canola is actually the highest %, so it will be interesting to see how it holds up. I can't recall using canola oil before, I think this might be my first soap with it. I've been very lucky so far and haven't experienced any DOS yet with any of the short-shelf-life oils I've used, but my oils tend to be fairly fresh because I buy them in smaller quantities. Canola is definitely one of the more economical ones around here though, is it the same where you live?

    2. Yes,it is,it's about 2 EUR/l for cold pressed oil. With o.o.going double up,it is the cheapest one.I've seen many European soapers use it at large amounts on regular basis,so I suppose it's good performing one.

  3. Those colors are beautiful, but I would not have noticed the green parts if I had not seen the video. Somehow it looks on my computer like red, white and vanilla soap.

    1. It was a really odd occurrence, I'm lucky it stayed fluid enough to swirl. Red, white and vanilla sounds like candy, I must have had food on the brain again! ;)

  8. How funny Cee, I just made Strawberry Rhubarb Pie batch last night with very similar colors and my red totally mellowed too! (unfortunately, I wanted a bold red) Your soap is beautiful as always though, great swirls! And I don't think I have every heard of a tayberry, hmm!

    1. Oh gosh, that sounds divine Laura...yummy! It's really hard to get a bold red...I should have mixed a little bit of red iron oxide in to boost the color, I had done that before with good results. Thanks so much for your nice comments!

  11. Love the music you had in your video. I had watched it via Twitter and I had my speakers on full blast. :)

I didn't really see the green at first, just the red and white, and the swirling reminded me for some reason of some soft chewy candy, but I can't think of the specific type.

Definitely cool soap and the scent sounds fantastic.
