I was testing a new pumpkin (yum!) fragrance and grabbed my
camera to capture the freshly-poured raw soap:
I checked on it about a half hour later and was fascinated
to see that it was trying to gel, it looked like apple pie! Then I spied this naughty crack:
I remembered that I had pinned this handy-dandy video on Pinterest showing how to fix cracks (which are caused by overheating). Now, I
didn’t want to pat my fancy top down, as she shows in the video, so I spritzed the
crack liberally with rubbing alcohol and smoothed the crack with my gloved finger as
best I could:
I came back later and it was rockin’ the full gel:
Today, it’s more of a scar than a crack:
It smells heavenly, and this is the first of my fall soaps! What
are your favorite fall fragrances?
Oh! I like it. Never thought to fix a crack. I have been avoiding gel lately because it usually gets me in trouble, but the other day I did some gelling because I wanted to brighter colors...I accidentally squashed my tops...not a pretty sight! You know me! he he he
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, you crack me up Roxana...ha ha! I hope you took a picture to share! :D
DeleteJust soaped with a pumpkin pie fragrance yesterday: http://moodysoaps.blogspot.ca/2013/08/pumpkin-pie-in-august.html. I'm relatively new to the world of fragrance oils, but I'm loving the scent.
ReplyDeletePumpkin is definitely one of my favorite all-time fragrances! Your pumpkin soap turned out amazing, so beautiful!
DeleteThanks so much for sharing your blog link Deirdre, I love discovering new blogs! I hope you don't mind, I'm going to add the clickable link to your blog here: http://moodysoaps.blogspot.ca
Sounds great, thanks Cee :) Glad that you liked the soap! I'm really enjoying using a slab mold. Lots of experimentation!
DeleteThanks Cee for the awesome tip! I have cut off the tops of my soaps before because of cracks. Going to get out my pumpkin soap recipe after seeing this post...hard to realize that summer is almost gone!
ReplyDeleteThe summer is just flying by, isn't it Gloria?! Can't wait to see your soap, pumpkin soap is one of my absolute favorites :) I actually need to place an order for Christmas fragrances soon...that's scary!
DeleteThank you for the tip! I bet when you cut the soap the scar will hardly be noticeable. I am still waiting for my fall fragrances to arrive. I simply love the scent of spices, oranges, and most anything associated with fall. I can only imagine how yummy smelling your pumpkin soap is.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, hopefully you'll never need to use this tip though ;) Yes, oranges too are lovely for a fall fragrance, this pumpkin fragrance I used has a slight note of orange along with the spice, and it does compliment the pumpkin nicely.
DeleteI love how soft and textured the tops look - those are my favorite kinds of soaps! I've been looking into holiday scents recently - I think I totally forgot about the fall :) Time to get out the fall scents and have some fun (I love the Pumpkin Spice from BB with a little milk of some kind or pumpkin puree).
ReplyDeleteI almost completely forgot about fall too! I love soap with pumpkin and milk in it too...good luck with yours! :)
DeleteThanks for the tip! I don't want to be thinking of fall already, lol. The pumpkin soap is lovely and I like the color it turned out..or will it discolor?
ReplyDeleteI know, it's really hard to wrap your head around! It should discolor to a light caramel color :)
DeleteSo good that you observed the crack on timely manner. You fixed it properly and the top looks georgeous - as always!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gordana, I was actually planning on piping some white soap on top but it was taking forever to thicken up, so I gave up and went to bed!
DeleteDid not even know that you could try to make the cracks smaller. But it sure looks good. And I´m happy that I have not had any cracks on my soaps. Now that I wrote that it will probably mean that the next soap will have several cracks :D
ReplyDeleteI like cinnamon and other spices in my fall soaps. Can be a bit challenging, but it is worth it.
Hopefully you won't need to worry about cracks either! I like cinnamon and spice too, but they do tend to accelerate trace and/or thicken up and I forgot about that...hence the crack! ;)
DeleteFor fall this year I will be trying out a Pumpkin scent as well. And, I wanted to try an apple soap made with real applesauce and scented with some apple-spice type scent. Something warm and yummy.
ReplyDeleteOh, and apple soap with applesauce sounds really nice...perfect for fall!
DeleteThanks for the tip, Cee!
ReplyDeleteUseful as always!
The soap looks so delicious, Cee!
Thanks Natalia, hopefully you will never have to use this tip! ;)
DeleteThank you so much for this tip! Now I know what's happening and what to do! This post has inspired me to get ready for the the fall... outcomes the cinnamon! Thanks
ReplyDeleteYou're most welcome! Have fun with your fall soaps...can't wait to see what you come up with!
DeleteNoooo, I refuse to give into fall, not when we're smoking hot still!
ReplyDeleteThat was a brilliant move to smooth out the crack Cee, and as we all know, a scar adds character. ;) Pumpkin scent, that sounds fantastic. I've got gingersnap or some such FO that brings fall to mind for me.
Ohh, is your Gingersnap from BB? Theirs is LOVELY! I know, I feel bad bringing up the 'F' word, but it's coming you know ;)
DeleteYep, that's the one! It is an amazing scent.
DeleteOn the bright side, fall means I can start eating more and using bulkier clothes to hide the fat. ;)
Thanks for the tip, Cee Gee! I'm glad that you were able to minimize the cracking. I usually make a pumpkin soap for fall/winter, too. I like Element's Sweet Pumpkin FO. I recently bought a Cinnabun Type FO from Nature's Garden. Haven't soaped with it yet, but OMG, does it smell heavenly out of the bottle!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to find a pumpkin that isn't all spice! The two you mentioned sound really nice, I'll have to look into the Cinnabun one...it sounds like it might blend nicely with other fragrances too!
