Super Simple Overnight Hair Treatment

Long time, no soap :(

I hope you are all keeping well! As soon as the nice weather hit here, I felt like I should be spring cleaning and organizing, so that has got the better part of me lately. Things are getting back into order now, and I’m looking forward to turning my attention back to soap again soon.

In the meantime, I thought I would make something I’ve been meaning to make for a while, which is a leave-in overnight hair treatment:

I was first interested in trying this conditioner when I read about it on Marika’s blog; it looked so quick and simple, and the only special ingredient I needed to order was the BTMS. BTMS is an excellent conditioning agent that is naturally derived from Colza oil; it’s also self-emulsifying, so it is all that’s needed to bind the oil and tea together into a thick conditioner; 3 simple ingredients...how easy is that?!

My hair is color treated, which of course = damage :(  I really have to condition it heavily to keep it in good shape; my hair is also fine and tends to tangle super easy. So, I thought I would like to use Marika’s conditioner as a leave-in treatment on the ends of my hair overnight, here is a current picture of the back of my hair:

It’s not in bad shape, but I think using a bit of conditioner in the ends at night will definitely help keep it healthy.

This is the recipe I used from Marika’s blog:
1.5 tbsp oil
7-8 tbsp tea
1 tbsp BTMS
(preservative of choice)

Method: Melt the BTMS in the microwave, pour in the tea and oil; stir, stir, stir. I placed the mixture in the freezer to cool and firm up for about 10 minutes, stirring once, then added my preservative to the conditioner once it had cooled completely.

I chose sweet almond oil because it is nice and light, but Marika suggested that avocado or jojoba oil would be nice too. I used chamomile tea for shine at Marika’s suggestion, and also because it is good for blonde hair, but you could use whatever tea would suit your color and condition of hair.

Hope you all have a great week, and thanks for reading!

  1. So glad to see you back! I think your hair is gorgeous but we can all use some conditioner at some time, can't we? Thanks for sharing this recipe, I'm going to have to try it one of these days as well. Would you be able to add a fragrance oil to it or would that react negatively?

    1. I don't see why you couldn't fragrance this Monica! I just remembered I owe you an email too...off to do that right now!!!

    1. I forgot to tell you that I have now been using a conditioner with Abyssinian oil and it is even better than jojoba. It makes my hair shine even more and it contains 22 fatty acids that are good for both hair and skin. It is a light oil so I think it is perfect for a conditioner.

    2. Oooh, thanks Marika! Abyssinian oil is a new one to me, I'll try to locate it. You just reminded me too that Argan oil would be another good one!

  3. Your hair looks great! I was just thinking this morning I needed to find a recipe for an overnight hair treatment for my blond, processed long hair. I'm definitely going to give this a shot!

  4. Oh Cee,you have a long blonde hair! Don't know why,but I thought it was shorter and darker. Does the conditioner feels greasy in the morning? I never pay enough attention to my hair and when the ends split up,I just go have it cut!
Welcome back to soaping,I've missed your posts!

    1. Thanks Maja, it's good to be back :) I'm usually so wrong when I picture how someone looks...isn't it funny how we form that picture in our head? I don't think greasy is the right word, but you can definitely feel it in there the next morning and would have to wash it out (but perhaps I used too much?)

  5. This is so, so interesting! I just (gasp) bought some conditioner to give my hair an extra boost this summer. Do you wrap your hair in a towel overnight? I don't have any BTMS, so I'll have to add it to my "to buy" list. Thanks for this post!

    1. Oopsie, I buy my main conditioner too, lol! My hair is just so tangley, I need the heavy duty stuff after I shampoo! I didn't wrap my head in a towel, because I only used this on my ends. That would make a great conditioning treatment though; after you've applied the conditioner, to wrap your hair in a damp hot towel for a 15-minute intense conditioning treatment.

  6. Welcome back, Cee! I thought you were on holiday:)
You have nice hair! I love taking care of my hair using masks during weekends too, but never thought of using BTMS.
I only used to add BTMS in my shampoo recipe :)

  7. Hi Cee, may I know what is BTM? Thank you.

  8. Hi there! :) BTMS is an emulsifier, but it is also a conditioner, so it works well in skin and hair products. There are 2 kinds available, BTMS 25 and BTMS 50 (I used BTMS 25). Most of the soap supply companies carry BTMS (Aussie Soap Supplies carries it). I hope that helps!

  12. This conditioner can be out of the fridge? How long at room temperature?

    1. Hi Stephanie, because this product contains water, I used a preservative, and it can be kept at room temperature for a long time, depending on which preservative you choose to use. I am still using this same jar of conditioner. I hope that helps! :)
